SUMMARY:Seminar: Behind the Bars: A Psychologist’s Perspective on Designi
ng for Mental Health in Corrections
DESCRIPTION:Correctional facilities house some of the most vulnerable&mdash
;and most challenging—individuals in our communities. Nearly half of
incarcerated individuals have a history of mental illness, with many expe
riencing severe and chronic conditions. At the same time, correctional sta
ff face high rates of stress, burnout, PTSD, and suicide.\n\n\nThis presen
tation, led by a forensic psychologist turned correctional facility design
consultant, explores how the built environment can profoundly influence t
he mental health and behavior of both residents and staff. Through real-wo
rld examples, behavioral science principles, and evidence-based design str
ategies, attendees will learn how choices in lighting, acoustics, spatial
layout, and amenity planning can either hinder or enhance rehabilitation,
safety, and wellbeing. The session will also highlight cost-conscious, ope
rationally practical design solutions that improve safety, reduce recidivi
sm risk, and promote a healthier correctional culture—inside and out
side the walls.\n\n\nhttps://nsaconf.org
