SUMMARY:Seminar: Terrorism, torture and tots: investigating online crimes
DESCRIPTION:Communicating with others online or via cellphone has become a 
 way of life. It’s not just how we talk to each other, it’s how
  we exchange photos and videos we care about. And if it’s good for a
  good guy, it’s even better for a criminal. Clandestine online netwo
 rks (CONs) have become the prime venue for reaching out to terrorize someo
 ne – or a lot of someones. Groups like 764 and CVLT are not that dif
 ferent from street gangs.\n\n\nMembers work together to target vulnerable 
 youth, desensitizing them with images of sex, gore, and bestiality. The go
 al is to manipulate their victims into producing sexually explicit or othe
 r images that can then be used to threaten them into committing increasing
 ly more dangerous or illegal acts. Animal crushing CONs target vulnerable 
 animals that are systematically tortured to death and the images then dist
 ributed widely on the internet. Many of the perpetrators of animal violenc
 e also consume and share child pornography or participate in terroristic g
 roups.\n\n\nThis seminar will provide a high-level overview of how terror,
  torture, and child porn networks connect to one another and how infiltrat
 ion and investigation of these networks is currently being done. Tips and
