SUMMARY:Seminar: Fixing the Broken EAP Model in Law Enforcement: Reducing B
urnout Through Culturally Competent Mental Health Providers
DESCRIPTION:Law enforcement agencies across the country are investing in Em
ployee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to support officer wellness. However, ma
ny officers and deputies do not utilize these services due to a lack of cu
ltural competence among providers who do not understand the realities of l
aw enforcement work. This disconnect contributes to untreated stress, emot
ional exhaustion, burnout, and retention challenges within sheriff’s
offices.\n\n\nThis seminar examines the relationship between ineffective
EAP utilization and officer burnout. Participants will learn how occupatio
nal culture, stigma, and provider mismatch prevent many officers from seek
ing help. The session will also explore how agencies can improve officer w
ellness outcomes by partnering with culturally competent mental health pro
viders who understand law enforcement culture, trauma exposure, and the un
ique stressors of policing.\n\n\nDrawing from both clinical practice and l
aw enforcement experience, the presenter will provide practical strategies
for sheriffs and agency leaders to evaluate their current EAP services an
d build mental health partnerships that officers actually trust and use.\n
