SUMMARY:Seminar: Shielding the Public Square: Modern Strategies for Address
ing the Rise of Threats Against Public Figures
DESCRIPTION:In an era of increasing political polarization and digital conn
ectivity, the safety of elected government leaders, public officials, and
prominent local residents has become a critical concern for law enforcemen
 t. Recent data indicate a sharp rise in ideologically motivated threats, o
ften fueled by online rhetoric and misinformation. To address this evolvin
g challenge, this presentation will bring together multidisciplinary persp
ectives of local, federal, and academic stakeholders. The session aims to
discuss recent high-profile incidents and examine the transition from reac
tive policing to proactive behavioral intervention, ensuring that those wh
o serve the public can do so without fear of targeted violence.<br />\nA c
ornerstone of this discussion will be the operational model pioneered by t
he Fairfax County (VA) Police Department&rsquo;s (FCPD) Threat Assessment
and Management (TAM) Unit. The TAM Unit exemplifies a modern, systematic a
pproach by integrating law enforcement expertise with mental health and co
mmunity services. Panelists from the FCPD and academic scholars will demon
strate how the TAM and similar units identify, evaluate, and mitigate risk
s before they escalate into physical harm. By sharing case studies and bes
t practices, the workshop will provide a roadmap for agencies to build the
ir own multidisciplinary teams, emphasizing the balance between robust pub
lic safety and the preservation of individual civil liberties.\n\n\nhttps:
