SUMMARY:Seminar: From Gunfire Alert to Aerial Intelligence: How Omaha OD Us
es Drones as First Responders
DESCRIPTION:When gunfire occurs, the first few minutes of response are crit
ical. Agencies across the country are exploring how real-time intelligence
and aerial awareness can improve officer safety, decision-making, and inv
estigative outcomes during these high-risk moments.\n\n\nThis session exam
ines how the Omaha Police Department’s Air Support Unit has integrat
ed Drone-as-First-Responder capabilities into its gunfire-response workflo
w. By pairing real-time gunfire detection with rapid drone deployment, Oma
ha PD places aerial eyes on a scene within minutes—giving responding
officers immediate situational awareness before they arrive and reducing
uncertainty during the earliest moments of response.\n\n\nOmaha PD’s
Chief Pilot will walk attendees through a simulated gunfire-alert scenari
o, demonstrating the full response timeline—from alert to aerial int
elligence on scene. Attendees will see how this capability supports faster
, safer response decisions in real operational conditions.\n\n\nPanelists
will also speak candidly about what it takes to stand up and sustain a DFR
program—including what worked, what didn’t, and what other ag
encies should know before launching. Discussion will cover operational wor
kflows, dispatcher integration, privacy and governance practices, FAA coor
dination, and lessons learned along the way.\n\n\nAttendees will leave wit
h practical, field-tested guidance on how Drone as First Responder program
s can strengthen gunfire-response workflows and enhance public-safety oper
ations.\n\n\nhttps://nsaconf.org
