SUMMARY:Seminar: Mental Health in Rural Jails: Low-Cost Strategies for High
 Impact Change
DESCRIPTION:Rural jails face distinct challenges in supporting individuals
with mental health needs, including limited access to services, minimal st
aff training, geographic isolation, and persistent stigma. This presentati
on explores practical, low-cost interventions that correctional facilities
can implement to improve mental health outcomes and foster a more therape
utic environment. Drawing on principles of environmental psychology and be
haviorism, I will highlight strategies such as creating garden spaces, pro
moting healthy sleep and activity routines, enhancing staff communication
skills, and shifting from punitive to reward-based behavioral models. Atte
ndees will gain actionable insights to help build a culture of care and re
silience within their facilities—regardless of budget constraints.\n
