Now, more than ever jails are on the frontline of the opioid epidemic. Two-thirds of people in jail meet the criteria for drug dependency or abuse. Deaths in jails due to drug or alcohol intoxication increased by almost 19% from 2017 to 2018 and more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2018. Local government officials, jail administrators, correctional officers, and health care professionals all play a key role in developing policies, procedures, and practices to detect and properly manage acute withdrawal from substances among individuals in jails. This workshop will explore clinical, operational, and leadership perspectives on implementing MAT in the local jail. Facilitators will share contemporary practical information on MAT, engage participants in peer learning, and provide an overview of two resources for the nation’s jails: the Jails and Justice Support Center (JJSC) and the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP).
PRESENTERS: Panda Adkins, Director, JJSC, The CNA Corporation, Jill Harrington, COSSUP Clinician, Ed Hayes, Assistant Superintendent, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, MA, Kash Siddiqi, JJSC/ COSSUP
